The development of first all-electric car debut by Saab Automobile is taking its forward step with the co-operation of batteries from Boston Power, Electro engine from Sweden AB etc, to emerge the ePower Saab 9-3 vehicle.

Mid-sized sports combi with zero emissions

Saab says that it is a SportsCombi wagon which is equipped with electric-motor of capacity 184-hp with torque enabling up to 100 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in nearly 8.5 seconds and has a range of about 124 miles on a single charge offers comfort for the occupants. Saab for its public debut will come out in Paris Motor show later this month and for its extensive field trial, it will participate in Sweden later this year or early next year. The ePower battery pack with a combination of Lithium and Ion will be fitted into the space where normally the exhaust and fuel systems occupy.
-- Saab plans to bring an engine with a turbocharged BioPower engine with 2.0-liter which will run on E85 producing 220 hp at its peak to the U.S market.
-- A two-stage turbocharged diesel engine producing 190 hp can propel the 9-5 from 0 to 62 mph in less than 9 seconds.
-- A 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine will accelerate the 9-5 from 0 to 62 mph in 9.5 seconds and is rated at 180 hp.
The cars performance will be evaluated under different conditions of real world as part of the development process for a purpose-built, electric Saab vehicle. Using high density energy storage in Ionic lithium battery cells the targets to be verified include a projected driving range of approximately 200 kilometers.
Saab electric car is fitted with conventional cabin with automatic gearshift lever that provides options for drive, park, reverse and neutral. The read outs for battery status indication, consumed power indication and driving range are displayed with green illumination will replace the cluster. An electric brake for parking is fitted to optimize space. Hydraulic-electrical power steering and the complete cabin with full AC, a provision of 12v battery pack for the vehicle lights and cabin equipment separately are added advantages of the vehicle.

Driving range with excellent durability

Key to its long range of 200 kilometers is battery cells which have a high energy storage density contribute to a lower battery weight. The capacity of the battery pack is 35.5kW/h and is designed in such a way that it operates with full power in variant temperatures. The usage of air in place of liquid is another key benefit which contributes in cost reduction and even the weight reduction in the design of the pack. The battery pack is expected to support the best cycles of recharge of about ten year average use. Recharge of the battery can be done fully from the normal household power supply in less than six hours.
The car’s power pack is well protected and encapsulated locating outside the occupant compartment in non-deformable structural zones. The excellent battery management system and monitoring system of the vehicle supports safe performance during normal driving and even in the cases of crash conditions.
